This is a four day clinic spread across five days with one rest day in between unless conditions are such that we will paddle four days in a row. This ensures we optimize the four days of paddling for the best water conditions during the clinic duration. It will be a great clinic to take to if you want to get a head start on the competition, or just want to enjoy paddling on beautiful warm azure waters surrounding by amazing scenery. Note that you can contact us to provide shorter clinic durations or request a different clinic schedule.
We’ve been helping paddlers with the logistics of getting out on the water in Kauai since 2012. We always ask each paddler for their learning objective and appreciate feedback to ensure paddlers objectives are met. The most requested improvement is to get better at catching waves and to improve the duration of wave riding or linking. We will help you with the type of stroke to use for catching waves, discuss wave formations and patterns, then ease you into waters to best learn and have fun. When ready, we’ll take you out for downwinders to let you apply your new skills and knowledge for some fun runs working with you along the way so that you are catching waves as effectively as possible.
Safety is emphasized and we assess every paddler to ensure the appropriate paddle locations and runs are selected and before we take a paddler out to open waters. We’ll paddle in more protected waters if necessary, and select open water downwinders to satisfy the more eager paddler who wants to experience the thrill of an open water run.
The canoes will likely be, but not limited to Ares, Pueo, and doubles such as Gemini. The canoes are checked and are in top quality condition. Visit Kai Wa’a and Kamanu Composites for more details on some of the outrigger canoes we use.
*NOTE: We reserve the right to modify clinics into private or semi-private lessons at lesson rates if we don’t have a minimum of 6 paddlers attending a clinic. In the very unlikely event we have to cancel, we will refund your full cost of the clinic. If you need to cancel up to 2 months prior to the scheduled start date of a clinic, we will refund the full amount minus any admin fees charged to us, unless it affects the minimum participation requirement in which case the refund will be 50% minus admin fees. If you cancel within two months of a clinic start date then the refund will be 50% minus admin fee since most of the fixed costs for the clinic will have been paid for and cannot be reimbursed. During the clinic, paddlers are responsible for any damages to the boats they are using. If there are damages, then the instructor or management will determine if the boat needs to be completely replaced or can be repaired.
Please also note that even for our novice clinics, paddlers must still have adequate experience on an outrigger and must pass the instructors assessment including demonstrating a remount to be permitted to paddle in the open ocean. If you fail the assessment then please note that we won’t be able to refund, but we will try to accommodate a paddling experience in safe protected waters which may have additional costs if a private instructor is required.
Aloha, The clinics take place in different locations. The best place to locate yourself us in the center of the island. Poipu, Kapaa area. A car would be an asset, island cars gas hood second hand cars at a hood rate. After you register I can share with you other paddlers that are going to be taking the clinic so you can look to arrange rides etc. Mahalo for your interest. Tim

Would be great to share expenses
Do you have any updates on the Kauai Winter clinic? I have paid for this clinic (for 6 OC paddlers). Can you suggest where to stay…any information would be appreciated…for example can you suggest a place to stay? Is the clinic still happening in 2022?
I’m interested in the clinic on Kauai Oct 29th -Nov 2nd. Can you tell me who is instructing this clinic? Thank you!
Aloha David, which clinic were you thinking of taking? Each clinic is a little bit different and the expectations are also different. Fitness, skill level, experience are all taken into consideration.
Hello, I am interested in taking one of your 5-day clinics. Can you tell me what the expectations are for general fitness level or OC-1 experience?\
